St. Tammany Fire District 1 this morning was named one of the “Safest 70″ by the Louisiana Workers Compensation Corporation, which insures more than 19,000 clients in the state. It is the third consecutive year Fire District 1 has received the award, which is based on claims and other variables for the previous five years.

Of the five races, three had outright winners, and two are headed to a May 1 runoff. The current chief of police is now the mayor-elect, and the current mayor is going into a runoff with a former Sheriff’s Office deputy for the chief of police office. The incumbent in the Council District C race is also going into a runoff with a political newcomer, and two political neophytes will be sitting on the City Council July 1 in Districts B and G respectively.

Former St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office Lt. Randy Smith and Mayor Ben Morris led a four-man field in Saturday’s election for Slidell police chief and will meet in a May 1 runoff. Pearl River police Lt. John “J.J.” Jennings and private security supervisor Jason Zar finished third and fourth, respectively.
